(Evansville, IN) – Another arrest has been made in connection with last weekend’s shooting of a former Greensburg police officer in Evansville.

Officer Sam Taylor and a suspect were shot early Sunday morning when police spotted a stolen vehicle at a fast-food restaurant.

Taylor was seriously wounded. He served with the Greensburg Police Department in 2023 and 2024.

Taylor was still in the Evansville Police Department’s training period, and the suspect – 18-year-old Jailani Chew – was shot by Taylor’s field training officer.

A juvenile was arrested shortly after the incident.

Chew was booked into the Vanderburgh County Jail after he was released from the hospital. He’s facing several charges, including Attempted Murder, Robbery and Resisting Law Enforcement.

Evansville Police tracked down the serial number of the weapon allegedly used by Chew, which police say was purchased from 25-year-old Maurice Cobb Jr. of Evansville.

Investigators say Cobb was under a felony indictment in Perry County for child neglect, and falsely filled out the firearm paperwork by stating he wasn’t facing felony counts, which is a state and federal firearms violation.

Cobb has been charged with Making a False statement on a Firearms Consent Form and Unlawful Carrying of a Handgun.

Officer Taylor was last reported in stable condition but in danger of losing the use of his lower extremities.

The Evansville FOP has set up a relief fund to help Taylor’s family.
