Solar Walkway at Honda Greensburg Plant Could Be a Record-Setter

(Greensburg, IN) – Honda’s Indiana Auto Plant (IAP) in Greensburg is home to a newly-built 650-foot solar panel-covered walkway.

It could be the longest solar pedestrian walkway in the world – spanning longer than two football fields – and is designed to provide clean energy for the plant and support its associates.

The walkway was motivated by Honda associates at IAP after the Greensburg facility’s environmental team saw an opportunity to align infrastructure improvements with energy efficiency to activate a fully-functioning power-generation system.

After exploring options such as wind turbines and green walls, the team settled on solar panels, not on the roof, but as a canopy over the walkway.

Officials say the project exceeds IAP’s target to reduce 35% of electricity usage in the adjacent Quality building.

Given that the project team believes the solar walkway may be the longest in the world, they’re in discussions with Guinness World Records.

The team also is evaluating adding a digital display to show real-time energy savings and carbon offsets, which they say would help associates visualize the impact of their walk.
