Batesville won the Ripley County girls golf meet at North Branch last evening. As a team, the Bulldogs shot a 161. Second place Jac-Cen-Del carded a 236; South Ripley 239 and Milan 255. Bulldog senior Ava South took medalist honors with an even par 35. Batesville swept the all-county team, with all five golfers being selected. They were South, Stella Maple (who carded a 40), Alexis Gallagher (41), Zoe Ahern (45) and Grace Saner (49).
Oldenburg Academy blanked Union County 7-nil in boys soccer Monday at the Graveyard. Six different Twisters found the back of the net. Adam Weber, Ethan Short, Teddy and Augie Sheppard, Marcus Bonilla and Connor Holder all scored. Bonilla and the Sheppard brothers all scored their first career goals. Ryan Hautman and Jackson Schnebelt each recorded a save in the shutout win.
Batesville topped Greensburg 4-1 in boys tennis. The Bulldogs improve to 7-2 overall and 3-1 in the EIAC.
The San Diego Padres knocked off the Reds 4-3 in 10 innings on the West Coast in a game heard late last night on WRBI. Nick Lodolo was sharp in his return from illness, giving up two hits while striking out two and walking one in five innings of work. The Reds squandered an early 3-0 lead, and a chance to gain ground in the National League Wild Card race after the New York Mets were shut out 1-0 at Philadelphia. Cincinnati remains four games behind New York for the final playoff spot with 18 games remaining. Game two of the series is tonight. Zach Littell faces Michael King in the starting pitching matchup. Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen is still beaming about how well things went for his team this past Sunday after they beat the Miami Dolphins 33-8. He says he was particularly happy with the play of rookie tight end Tyler Warren, who caught a team-high seven passes for 76 yards. Now they turn their attention to the Denver Broncos, who are coming off a win over Tennessee. Kickoff Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium is at 4:05 p.m.
Notre Dame is getting back in the saddle this week after their Week 2 bye. Head coach Marcus Freeman says his team has been itching to get back on the field after their loss to Miami to open the season. The Fighting Irish home opener is Saturday against Texas A&M. Freeman says they know what they need to do to keep improving.
The Indiana Hoosiers boatraced Kennesaw State 56-9 last Saturday, but head coach Curt Cignetti says the team was far from perfect despite the result. He says they need to be better, particularly on defense, which he says gave up one too many long drives to the Owls. The Hoosiers have a chance to clean things up a bit more on Saturday when they face Indiana State at Memorial Stadium. The Sycamores are also 2-0.
