(Decatur County, IN) – Indiana State Police detectives from the Versailles Post are investigating a deadly officer-involved shooting that happened in rural Decatur County Wednesday afternoon.
Investigators say around 2:30 p.m., two Decatur County Sheriff’s deputies spotted a vehicle believed to be linked to an earlier criminal incident in Ripley County.
A Greensburg Police officer responded to assist.
ISP says the suspect in the Ripley County incident was believed to be in the vehicle and was wanted on an active warrant for an unrelated matter.
The deputies and officer pulled over the vehicle occupied by two men and a woman on County Road 400 East just north of County Road 300 North.
The officers positioned themselves to conduct a high-risk traffic stop and called each occupant out of the vehicle individually.
Troopers say a passenger, identified as the suspect, exited the vehicle armed with a handgun and pointed the weapon toward officers.
They fired at the armed man, which caused him to drop to the ground.
The officers then moved the other occupants to safety and began rendering aid to the suspect.
Despite lifesaving efforts, the suspect – identified as 39-year-old Travis Manlief of Greensburg – was pronounced dead at the scene.
None of the officers or any bystanders were injured.
The deputies and officer involved were each equipped with body worn cameras that were activated during the incident, along with in-car cameras in each of their patrol vehicles.
ISP was called to investigate at the request of the Decatur County Sheriff.
Troopers say the investigation is ongoing and there is no further information to release at this time.
ISP detectives are being assisted by the Decatur County Sheriff’s Office, Greensburg Police Department, Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, Decatur County EMS, Decatur County Coroner and the Decatur County Prosecutor’s Office.
