Postseason honors continue to roll in for area high school baseball players. North Decatur incoming sophomore pitcher Matthew Fields was named to the Indiana Prep Baseball Report’s 1A All-State Team. Carson Schneider from Batesville and East Central’s Matthew Roy were named academic all-state by the Indiana High School Baseball Coaches Association. To be named Academic All-State, a player must have been a senior during the 2025 season and play in 70 percent of his team’s games. If the player is the school’s valedictorian or salutatorian, they automatically make the all-academic team, otherwise the player must qualify with a score of eight on the academic formula that takes into account player’s GPA and SAT/ACT scores.
The Miami Marlins beat the Reds 5-1 at Great American Ball Park in a game heard last night on WRBI. Marlins starter Janson Junk allowed one run on one hit over six innings of work. Cincinnati mustered just three hits on the night against Miami pitching. Brady Singer took the loss for Cincinnati after giving up two runs in his 5 innings on the mound. Game two of the four-game series is tonight. Nick Martinez gets the start for the Reds. Eury Perez goes for the Marlins. Coverage begins at 6:40 on 103.9 FM.
Before last night’s game, Reds pitcher Hunter Greene announced he won’t be starting his rehab assignment today as previously scheduled. Greene is on his second stint this year on the Injured List due to a right groin strain. He reported soreness in the same area after throwing a bullpen session in Philadelphia on Sunday.
The Reds yesterday activated IF/OF Connor Joe (hand, foot, and mouth disease) from the 10-day Injured List and optioned OF Rece Hinds to Triple-A Louisville.
The Washington Nationals have fired manager Dave Martinez and general manager Mike Rizzo. The Nationals are 37-53 and in last place in the National League Eastern Division. Bench coach and former Red Miguel Cairo was named interim manager. Senior Vice President and assistant GM Mike DeBartolo is taking over for Rizzo, also on an interim basis.
As expected, Indiana Pacers guard Tyrese Haliburton will miss all of next season with his Achilles injury. Pacers President of Basketball Operations Kevin Pritchard made the announcement on Monday. Haliburton suffered the injury in Game Seven of the NBA Finals against Oklahoma City. The Pacers also announced on Monday they’ve re-signed center James Wiseman. He was playing for the Pacers when he tore his left Achilles tendon in the ’24-’25 season-opening game against the Detroit Pistons.
