Oldenburg Academy advanced in the IHSAA boys’ tennis sectional last night at East Central. The Twisters held off Milan 3-2 to advance to this afternoon’s second round match against the host Trojans. In the other first round match at East Central, it was Lawrenceburg over South Dearborn 5-0. The Tigers go up against Batesville this evening.

Senior Genevieve Smith set the all-time scoring mark for Greensburg girls’ soccer in Tuesday’s 4-1 home loss against South Dearborn. Smith’s 42 career goals broke the previous mark held by Maddy Helmich and Macy Smith.

The Greensburg Junior High 8th grade volleyball team lost in two sets, 25-11, 25-18, to Waldron last night. Top servers for the Pirates were Makayla Keiffer, Sophie Buening, and Abby Porter.

In the Major League Baseball Wild Card playoffs, the San Diego Padres eliminated the Atlanta Braves 5-4. Batesville’s Bryan Hoeing came on in relief of Padres starting pitcher Joe Musgrove with two outs in the fourth inning, and tossed 1 1/3 innings. Hoeing gave up a earned run on one hit with one strikeout. San Diego takes on the Los Angeles Dodgers in one National League Divisional Series beginning Saturday evening.

Elsewhere, the Milwaukee Brewers stayed alive by edging the New York Mets 5-3. The third and deciding game in that National League Wild Card series is tonight in Milwaukee.

It was the Kanas City Royals nipping the Baltimore Orioles 2-1. KC wins the series two games to none and will face the Yankees in the American League Divisional Series. Game one is on Saturday night.

The Detroit Tigers knocked off the Houston Astros 5-2. The Tigers sweep the two-game series and will play Cleveland in the AL Divisional round starting Saturday.

The Reds have reportedly ruled out six potential candidates for the manager’s job, which opened when David Bell was fired last month. The Cincinnati Enquirer’s Gordon Wittenmeyer is reporting the candidates not being considered are current backup catcher Luke Maile, former Red Miguel Cairo, Reds and National Baseball Hall of Famer Barry Larkin, and former major league managers Joe Gerardi, Scott Servais and Joe Maddon. The Reds have been linked to former Miami Marlins manager Skip Schumaker and former Chicago Cubs skipper David Ross. Both Shumaker and Ross are former Reds.
