Louis G. Hempfling, 89 years old of Sunman, IN, passed away peacefully on Saturday, August 24, 2024. Lou grew up in Sayler Park before starting a family in Groesbeck and eventually moving to Sunman, IN. Lou met his soon to be wife, Rovena Kleiner, at a Catholic dance in downtown Cincinnati. They were married less than a year later and were blessed with 10 children. As their family continued to grow, they were fortunate to find a large home in Sunman that previously housed the ministers from a church across the street. This home was a dream that provided a large kitchen with multiple refrigerators and stoves and plenty of counterspace to accommodate everyone. Lou worked at GE Aerospace as an aviation technician where he performed jet engine testing. After retirement, his focus shifted from his 8-5 job to a full-time caretaker for his wife who was sick. Everyday Lou poured his heart into caring for her. Always a hardworking man, he made his own tools so that he could work on his family’s cars. With 10 children, there wasn’t always a lot of free time, although as the kids got older he enjoyed playing tennis and going fishing. A devout Catholic, Lou belonged to St. Paul’s Campus of All Saints Parish and always said that church had the best kneelers.
Lou will be deeply missed by his children Ruth Hempfling, Annette (Brian Wolverton) Hempfling, Ellen (John) Lima, Michael (Lisa) Hempfling, Gregory (Patricia) Hempfling, Bernard Hempfling, Mary Hempfling, and Loretta Hempfling; 13 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren. He is preceded in death by wife Rovena Hempfling, children Louis and Frances Hempfling; parents William & Cecilia Hempfling; and siblings Rose Kissler, Philip Hempfling, Raymond Hempfling.
Services for Louis will be held on Wednesday, August 28 at St. Paul’s Church in New Alsace. Rosary will begin at 9:45 followed by visitation until the beginning of Mass at 11:00am. Burial with military honors will immediately follow in the church cemetery. For those unable to attend, Mass will be live streamed at https://www.youtube.com/user/aspweeklyhomily.
