Heat Advisory, Air Quality Action Day issued for SE Indiana

(Southeastern IN) – A Heat Advisory will be in effect today from Noon till 9 pm.

We can expect heat index values up to 102.

The National Weather Service says hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses to occur.

You’re urged to drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room, stay out of the sun, and check up on relatives and neighbors.

Young children and pets should never be left unattended in vehicles under any circumstances.

Forecasters say you should take extra precautions if you work or spend time outside. When possible reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or evening.

Know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke. Wear lightweight and loose-fitting clothing when possible.

To reduce risks during outdoor work, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration recommends scheduling frequent rest breaks in shaded or air-conditioned environments. Anyone overcome by heat should be moved to a cool and shaded location. Heat stroke is an emergency, and if you suspect someone has it, call 9-1-1.

It’s also an Air Quality Action Day.

Indiana Department of Environmental Management forecasters expect higher ozone as hot and hazy conditions make their way into the area.

High temperatures near or over 90 degrees combined with light winds will lead to conditions that are suitable for ozone to build and make it unhealthy for sensitive groups.

Anyone sensitive to changes in air quality may be affected when ozone levels are high.

Children, the elderly, and anyone with heart or lung conditions should reduce or avoid exertion and heavy work outdoors.
