Greensburg, IN — The two candidates for Decatur County Sheriff took part in a forum sponsored by the Greensburg Rotary Club Monday afternoon.
Incumbent David Durant, who is running as an Independent, and Republican challenger Bill Meyerrose fielded questions ranging from leadership style, top priorities for law enforcement, mental health, and active shooter incident training.
With a recent local incident in which body cameras are part of the investigation in mind, Meyerrose said they’re needed now more than ever.
“The courts expect body cams these days, the people and public expect body cams these days, and I believe you’re entitled to that. It’s an important piece of evidence,” Meyerrose said. “If there’s an allegation of officer misconduct, let’s go watch the video! Let’s see it! To me, there are so many more pros than cons whatsoever, other than the cost.”
Durant, whose agency does not have body cameras based on the expense and other factors, says he trusts his deputies.
“There’s no state mandate, so for anybody to say he refuses to get body cameras, it’s not a law – it’s a recommendation. It’s also exploded since the demonizing of the law enforcement profession in these United States,” Durant said.
Durant added he has not experienced a groundswell of demand for Decatur County deputies to wear the devices.
“Actually, Mr. Meyerrose is the only person who’s ever asked for body cameras,” Durant added. “I’ve never had any citizen come to me, come to my (office) door or even send me an email in four years and ask, ‘Why don’t you have body cameras?'”
This year’s race is a rematch of 2018, in which Durant edged Meyerrose by 70 votes.
The candidate forum was held in the Decatur County REMC Community Room and was moderated by Rotarian and Greensburg/Decatur County Economic Development Director Bryan Robbins.
