Shiners hold off repeated attacks by the Indians

After getting down early Friday night against Rising Sun, Milan’s boys varsity kept making come back after come back.  But as heard on the Sports Voice, the visiting Shiners held on to win 73-68.

In this non-ORVC meeting, Rising Sun scored the game’s first nine points and held a 13-point lead during the first quarter.  By the stop it was 21-12.  The Shiners Dylan Martin hit a trio of triples during the first eight minutes.

In quarter two, the Indians closed to within five only to fall behind by 16 at the half, 43-27.  Peyton Merica had a big second period for the Shiners and talled 11 points at intermission.  Milan’s MJ Hartman had a strong first half overall and posted 14 points.

The Tribe made yet another run in the third, fighting all the way back to get as close as three.  However, Rising Sun hit two key baskets in the final 30 seconds to retain a seven-point lead with a quarter to go, 52-47.

RS stretched its lead to 11 in the fourth, yet the Indians made another charge to draw within three.  But the Shiners refused to give up the lead and won by five.

Rising Sun dominated the boards in the first half with a plus-16 advantage.  Milan was more competitive on the glass in the second half but the Shiners still won that battle by 20 (39-19) which included, plus-13 on the offensive end (17-6).

The Indians had a better overall shooting night, but were outgunned 2-to-1 from the arc (30-15) and also outscored at the line by eight (13-5).

Milan won the turnover total with only seven miscues to Rising Sun’s 14.

The Shiners placed four in doubled figure scoring.  Damon Carrigan and Peyton Merica both scored 16 while Dilan Martin and Brady Works had a dozen each.

The Indians’ MJ Martin led all with 23, Ben Riehle put in 13, Caiden Yorn scored nine and Landon Morgan added eight.

Milan won the JV game 41-29.  Logan Burton led the Indians with 14 points, Killian Budd booked eight and Jacob McGuire followed with seven.  Brody Morris tallied 11 for the Shiner reserves.
