SOUTHEASTERN IN — Southeastern Indiana, the state, and the rest of the country will pause this weekend to remember the 20th anniversary of the 9/11 attacks. Nearly 3.000 people died at the World Trade Center in New York City, the Pentagon in Washington, D.C., and in Shanksville, PA.
Franklin County Commissioners will hold a service at the Veterans Memorial in front of the Government Center Friday at Noon. Pastor Steve Rundel will say a prayer for the lives lost. The 13 US service members who died in the Afghanistan terrorist attack last month will also be honored with the reading of their names. A moment of silence will follow.
The Milan community will remember native son, US Army Col. Canfield “Buddy” Boone, and others who died that day during a Remembrance Ceremony at Daren Baker Memorial Park. Col. Boone was a member of the Milan High School Class of 1966, who died at the Pentagon. The event gets underway at 8:30 Saturday morning.
The Greensburg Fire Department will hold a 9/11 Memorial Service at Fire Station 1 starting at 8:30 am Saturday. The event will feature speakers, singers, and a bagpipe player who will play “Amazing Grace.” The fire department will also host an open house with refreshments such as donuts, coffee, milk, and juice after the ceremony.
Other events around the area include the Greensburg/Decatur County Public Library’s participation in the 9/11 Memorial and Museum’s education exhibit titled, “September 11, 2001: The Day That Changed The World.” That interactive exhibit ends its two-week run on Saturday. And The Tree County Players will do a staged reading of the 9/11-themed play “The Guys” both Friday and Saturday at 7 pm.
Meanwhile, Governor Eric Holcomb is directing flags statewide to be flown at half-staff in honor of Patriot Day. Flags should be flown at half-staff from sunrise until sunset on Saturday, September 11. The Governor is also asking businesses and residents to lower their flags to half-staff in remembrance of the victims of the September 11 terror attacks.
