The EC Varsity and JV Volleyball teams traveled to Southport on Saturday to participate in their annual invitational. JV finished 3rd on the day, going 2-1. Varsity went 3-0 on the day to finish as Champions for the second year in a row.
We opened the day vs Indianapolis Scecina Memorial. We won with the scores of 19-25, 25-23, and 15-10. We started incredibly slow. The team on the court at the start of the day was not the team I know we are. We weren’t awake and were just going through the motions. Scecina took advantage of that. We didn’t start playing our game until midway through the second set and managed to squeak by to force set 3. That’s when we really decided to start playing and it showed on the scoreboard.
Our next match of pool play was against Indianapolis Lutheran. We started off slow again and decided to turn it on a little too late in set one. We lost set one 24-26. But we bounced back and turned it on the remainder of the match. The girls were night and day difference and I finally recognized the team on the court. They were fun to watch and started executing. We finished the match with the scores of 25-9 and 15-8.
We lacked energy and intensity all day, but they pulled it out when it mattered most. In the championship game we faced the home team, Southport. The girls were pumped up, loud, and controlled the game from the start. We won the first set 25-18. Set two went back and forth most of the time, but we couldn’t get a stop at the end of the game and lost 23-25. Set three was very up and down for us. We found ourselves down early 2-7, but went on a run to bring us back into the game after a kill from senior Mack Ewing and four consecutive aces and two more serves from junior libero Alex Disbro. It went back and forth until we pulled out the win 15-13.
I’m very proud of these girls. We didn’t play well most of the day and made it a lot harder than it should have been, but they never quit. They stayed focused and found a way to win. It takes real grit to be able to do that when things aren’t going your way. This team is determined to do something other teams at EC haven’t done. They are fun to watch.
Varsity is now 5-0 on the season. Next up: JV and Varsity travel to Rushville for another EIAC match on Tuesday.
