Helen Schmerr, 85, Bright

Helen P. Schmerr, 85, of Bright, Indiana, passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, April 6 surrounded by family.

Helen was born at home in Cincinnati, Ohio on December 9, 1938 to George and Pearl Romans. She married the love of her life, Phil, on November 29, 1956 and they were blessed to share 67 years of marriage. The joy of Helen’s life was her family. She was the mother to Lynn (Don) Schultz, Lori Schmerr, Kathy (Dan) Luebbering, and Scott (Andrea) Schmerr. She was the proud grandmother to Stefanie (Jacob) Hiltz, Andrew (Lindsay) Schultz, Tyler (Alexa) Luebbering, Kylie Luebbering, Bailey Schmerr, Molly Luebbering, Samuel Schmerr, and Emma Schmerr. She was “Grandma Helen” and “Momo” to 8 great-grandchildren: Abram and Harper Hiltz, Addalynn Schultz, Ella Luebbering, Penelope and Piper Luebbering, Sam Schmerr, and Ryder Tingle. She also leaves behind two very special nephews, Tony and David Murphy; she always appreciated their love and support.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents: George and Pearl (Allen) Romans, and her brothers and sisters: George Romans, Betty Murphy, Lorraine Vonderhaar, Marie Newman, and Paul Redman.

Helen cherished her time working in her flowerbeds and yard at her home in Bright. She always had beautiful flowers and fresh tomatoes in the summer. She loved spending time with Phil and their dogs on their many camping trips to Myrtle Beach. Many spoiled dogs held a special place in her heart but Charlie and Little Joe were perhaps the most special; they were always by her side. Helen will be fondly remembered by her family for her spectacular cooking skills: her Christmas cookies, macaroni and cheese, barbecue and coleslaw, and sweet tea were the ultimate comfort foods.

A memorial service honoring Helen will be held on Friday, April 12 from 2:00pm – 4:00pm at Andres-Wuestefeld Funeral Home. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Loving Hearts Hospice and Palliative Care or Friends of Franklin County Animal Shelter.
