Batesville, In. — In 1993 dinosaurs dominated the big screen in Jurassic Park, Whitney Houston’s “I Will Always Love You” topped the music charts, Beanie Babies were the biggest toy craze, and Intel introduced the Pentium Processor.

Here in Southeastern Indiana, news was being made as well! Thanks to the vision of Danial A. Hillenbrand and support of the John A. Hillenbrand Foundation, among many other key contributors, the Southeastern Indiana YMCA opened its doors on April 19, 1993.  The Southeastern Indiana YMCA is inviting the community to take part in their 25th Anniversary Celebration at their 3rd Annual “Sneaker Ball” on Friday, April 6th from 6:00-11:00 PM at Walhill Farm. After dinner and a brief presentation, guests will enjoy entertainment and dancing to live music by local favorite Nuttin Fancy. On the menu: Parmesan baked chicken with lemon beurre blanc, boneless pork chop served with Walhill BBQ sauce, herb roasted new potatoes, medley of fresh vegetables, garden salad, dinner rolls and dessert. Guests are also encouraged to don their favorite sneakers and decorate them if they want the chance to win the “Best Sneakers” Prize.

“The Y is more than a gym, it’s a place of community,” says Angie Harmeyer, Southeastern Indiana YMCA Executive Director. “Since before ground broke in June of 1992 the Y mission has been to support our community, and as the needs of the community have shifted, we have adapted our offerings to make sure that everyone has the tools they need to reach their full potential – whether it’s through our recently upgraded swim lesson program, our new Parkinson’s Class, or our “On My Way Pre-K” free preschool program, we’re here for you and your family.”

The first year that the Southeastern Indiana YMCA was open, they offered various youth programs like basketball and swim lessons, and introduced the area to aquatic fitness classes for adults. In 1995, the Y expanded its facility to offer a state-licensed full facility Childcare Center with a capacity of 140+ children. Then yet another major milestone project was completed in December of 1999 when the second gymnasium, new Wellness Center, racquetball ball court, three new program rooms and expanded walking track opened. The Y also added a wing in child care to house before and after school care for 40 additional children.

For 25 years the Southeastern Indiana YMCA has stayed committed to making the greatest possible impact transforming and strengthening lives and future health of children, adults, and families in our community. As memberships have steadily increased each year, so has the Y’s program offerings to include, among many others, membership scholarships, free 6th grade memberships, 24-hour access, and Nationwide Membership. “We hope the community will join us on April 6th as we not only honor the past 25 years, but also inspire the future youth and families we hope to serve for many generations to come,” added Harmeyer. Tickets are $45 each or a table of eight can be purchased for $320. Guests are asked to RSVP by March 21st by calling the Y at 812-934-6006 or visiting www.siymca.org and clicking on “Register for Programs.” Then search Sneaker Ball.

Healthy living through physical activity is central to the Southeastern Indiana YMCA’s cause. Programs at the Y are fun, interactive ways to engage members in activity, and positively impact their health regardless of their fitness level. Programs are designed to engage individuals in supportive group settings, enhancing social bonds and strengthening our community.  For more information on the Southeastern Indiana YMCA, visit their website at www.siymca.org, call 812-934-6006, or visit them at 30 State Road 129 S, Batesville, IN 47006.
