Yesterday I talked about Ace Moorman and the fact that he played with quite a group of athletes in the early 50’s at BHS. His teammates included at one time Danny Kile, Louis Dickman, Ham Werneke, Louis Enzinger, and a young man named Burst. Ace went on to play basketball at UC and shined in baseball in this area for years both as a player and later as a coach. Ham Werneke took his talents to Florida State where he teamed with a Wayne County athlete named Oler and the two led the Seminoles to a fantastic run in basketball. Ham returned to this area to also star in baseball and coaching. Danny Kile took his talents to Hanover where he was a two-sport star. All of these guys played multiple sports including football which I have not mentioned yet. Dan also coached later in this area before his untimely death. Louis Dickman played basketball at North Carolina State and then as a pro in the Baltimore area. Many will tell you he was the best basketball player to ever play at Batesville. The other two athletes I do not think played sports in college, but they were very good athletes as well. To think they all played here at the same time is phenomenal.
