St. Nicholas 8th Grade Team: Champs of the St. Louis Tourney.
St. Nicholas 7th Grade Team: Runner-up of the St. Louis Tourney.
The St. Louis Tourney was on Saturday, September 12. Teams included St. Louis, St. Michael’s, Greensburg, and St. Nicholas. The morning consisted of pool play for points. The teams accumulating the most points advanced to the championship.
It was Greensburg and St. Nicholas for 7th and 8th grade levels.
St. Nicholas 8th grade vs. Greensburg for the championship was a battle. St. Nicholas defeated Greensburg in the tourney last year, and the Pirates were trying to battle to take 1st place. St. Nicholas trailed the Pirates most of the time for the 1st set. Greensburg had a 13-7 lead early on, but St. Nicholas never gave up. The score reached 24-19 for the Pirates when St. Nicholas won the rally giving them the serve. St. Nick’s Katelynn Bishcoff stepped up to the line to serve knowing she could make no mistakes or the Pirates would take set 1 and the momentum of the match. Each point was played out in rallies back and forth. The score reached 24-24 when Katelynn served up a perfect serve, Greensburg returned it, St. Nck set it up and ended with a roll shot to take the point and claim set 1 with a score of 25-24. St. Nicholas went on to win set 2 with a score of 25-14. It was a total team effort by St. Nick. Erica Kathman and Molly Gregg helped anchor the net; Gregg and Bischoff handled the setting duties; Amelia Hartman, Rachel Kraus, and Ella Fledderman stepped up with consistent passing, serving and hitting. Throughout the day, Gregg served 52/54 with 16 Ace serves; Fledderman served 25/26; Bischoff served up 20-25.
The St. Nicholas 7th grade made it to the championship by getting exactly the points they needed in their last round of pool play against St. Michael. It was a major accomplishment for the young team to make it that far. Greensburg defeated them 10-25 and 8-25. They never gave up throughout the day. Members of the team: Jessica Rees, Taylor Whitehead, Anna Hudepohl, Bella Knueven, Katie Johnson, Jill Wilhelm, and Allie Andres.
