Ripley County fire departments receive rescue tubes

RIPLEY COUNTY, Ind. –Purdue University Extension Ripley County recently conducted an agriculture rescue and recovery training, to give emergency responders a better understanding of strategies for preventing and responding to grain related entrapment.

Ripley County Agriculture and Natural Resources Educator, Dave Osborne, coordinated the training.

A live demonstration and hands-on exercises on extrication techniques, rescue tube extrication, and interior grain bin hazards, were covered in the training.

Each fire department has developed plans and strategies for rescue when an entrapment occurs.

Of the 11 fire departments in Ripley County, 8 participated in the training that was held at the Southeast Purdue Agriculture Center in Butlerville.

In addition to training on extraction, each department that attended received a rescue tube to be used during an entrapment.

Each tube cost $1,800.

A storage bag was also delivered to each department to store the rescue tube.

Funding was provided by Purdue and local businesses.
