House plan domestic violence focus during General Assembly

INDIANAPOLIS – House Speaker Brian Bosma (R-Indianapolis) announced the support to raise awareness of a certain charity through the legislative session during Organization Day ceremonies Tuesday.

This year’s philanthropy, which the entire House participates in, is the Indiana Coalition Against Domestic Violence (ICADV).

According to the organization, one in every four women will experience domestic violence in her lifetime. An estimated 1.3 million women are victims of physical assault by an intimate partner each year. Unfortunately, most cases of domestic violence are never reported to the police.

“Domestic violence affects so many people throughout our state,” said Laura Berry, Executive Director of ICADV. “We are happy to work with the House legislators on this issue and are proud to be the recipient of the Speaker’s charity initiative in 2015 which will support local domestic violence programs.”

ICADV is a statewide alliance that provides technical assistance, resources, information and training to those who serve victims of domestic violence. The organization also promotes social and systems change through public policy, public awareness and education.

Rep. McMillin (R-Brookville) joined fellow legislators and staff by bringing in bedding, grocery store gift cards, art supplies and other items for domestic violence service providers across the state.

“Groups like the ICADV are leading the charge to end domestic violence in the state, and I am happy to support, and will continue to standby, these organizations moving forward,” said Rep. McMillin.
