Franklin County school board approves drug testing policy

BROOKVILLE, Ind. — The Franklin County School Board approved a drug testing policy that will take effect starting in June.

Franklin County Sheriff Ken Murphy stated he was in favor of the policy saying it gives students a reason to not fall into peer pressure and not experiment with drugs.

Seventh through twelfth graders can be randomly drug tested after the policy goes into effect.

The program will only apply to students who drive to school, or who participate in sports or other extracurricular activities.

School officials say if students test positive they will face penalties found in the student handbook, but will not be expelled.
