Zelma L. Barnes, 98, of Greensburg, passed away on Wednesday, October 19, 2022, at the Aspen Place Health Campus in Greensburg.
She was born in Decatur County, IN on May 8, 1924, as the daughter of Alphonse and Cleona (Gardner) Tichenor.
She married James W. Barnes on January 12, 1943, and he preceded her in death.
Zelma enjoyed gardening, sewing, quilting, cooking, cross stitch, and embroidery.
Zelma worked at Hillenbrand for seven and a half years in the casket division and then went on to work at Decatur County Memorial Hospital in the environmental division.
She was a member of the First Baptist Church and the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.
She is survived by one son, Arthur J. (Marcia) Barnes, Greensburg; one daughter, Nancy Jo (Dr. Charles) Baxter, Washington, IN; five grandchildren; thirteen great grandchildren; sisters: Bonnie Evans, Charlotte Huffmeyer, and Sally (Harley) Weber.
She was preceded in death by her parents, husband, James Barnes; and 6 siblings.
A visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, October 21, 2022, from 11:00 am to 12:30 pm at Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home in Greensburg. A funeral service will follow at 12:30 pm with her son-in-law, Dr. Charles C. Baxter IV and grandson-in-law, Pastor Jon Porter officiating. Graveside services will be held with grandson, Pastor Tim Baxter officiating at the South Park Cemetery following the funeral.
Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project or St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital.
