Winter Storm Warning through 7 am Friday; Ripley, Franklin & Decatur Counties RED travel status

SOUTHEASTERN IN — A Winter Storm Warning remains in effect for Southeastern Indiana through 7 am Friday. Several inches of snow and ice accumulations from three-tenths to one-tenth of an inch are expected.

Ripley, Franklin, and Decatur Counties are under a RED travel warning. The Red or “warning” status is the highest level of travel advisory; and travel may be restricted to emergency management workers only. During a Red status it is recommended that individuals refrain from all travel and comply with necessary emergency measures.

Dearborn County is under an ORANGE travel watch. The Orange or “watch” status means conditions are threatening to public safety, and that only essential travel – such as to and from work or in emergency situations – is recommended.

All area schools are closed Thursday and some will be closed on Friday because of the winter storm.

A complete list of school, government, and business closings can be found here.

INDOT Southeast crews are working 12-hour shifts in the Aurora sub-district to treat and clear roads through at least Friday morning.

Governor Eric Holcomb activated the Indiana National Guard as part of the state’s response to the winter storm.

Two hundred and forty soldiers have been organized into 60 teams and are positioned at armories across Indiana to help stranded motorists across the state.

Both the Governor and the INDOT commissioner are asking people not to drive today.

Holcomb says Indiana has the necessary resources to respond to the winter storm.

He also asks residents to check on their neighbors, especially the elderly.

Holcomb says this storm is the first significant statewide weather event he’s had to deal with since being sworn in as Governor in 2017.
