(Statehouse) – Students across Indiana could be prohibited from having cell phones during the school day if Senate Bill 78 becomes law.
The measure passed the Senate Education Committee this week and is heading to the full Senate for consideration.
A similar bill filed last year had some momentum in initial hearings but died in committee.
This year’s legislation calls for banning students from having cell phones and smart watches on them during the school day.
Exceptions would be made for medical needs, which would require a doctor’s note.
If a student has to have their phone with them for other needs, they would have to have permission from their superintendent.
The bill is expected to come up for a vote late next week.
