Sports Daily Digest October 16, 2025

Batesville boys soccer nipped Charlestown 1-nil in regional semifinal action last evening on the Bulldogs’ home pitch. BHS improves to 7-8-2 with the win, and advances to Saturday afternoon’s Class 2A regional final against Heritage Hills at Washington.

Oldenburg Academy fell to Southwestern (Hanover) 3-1 in the 1A regional semis at Madison. Connor Holder scored the Twisters’ lone goal on a pass from senior Ethan Short, who played his final match for OA. Ryan Hautman had 10 saves in goal and Teddy Sheppard recorded a non-goalie save.  The Twisters finish the season 11-5-4.

Tonight, it’s the girls turn at regional soccer semis. East Central travels to Franklin Central in Class 3A, and Oldenburg Academy visits Monrovia in 1A.

Elsewhere, Franklin County goes up against Batesville in the 3A Sectional at South Dearborn, and North Decatur faces Waldron in 1A play at Morristown.

The Cincinnati Bengals entertain the Pittsburgh Steelers in NFL action tonight. Kickoff in downtown Cincinnati is at 8:15.

The Bengals placed tight end Mike Gesicki on injured reserve yesterday. He suffered a pectoral injury last Sunday against Green Bay. Gesicki will miss at least four games.

The Indianapolis Colts have signed quarterback Brett Rypien to their practice squad. The move comes after the Colts placed backup quarterback Anthony Richardson on injured reserve on Monday. Richardson sustained a fractured orbital bone during pregame band work on Sunday. Rypien was signed to the Bengals practice squad in late August and elevated to the active roster as Jake Browning’s backup after Joe Burrow suffered a toe injury that required surgery. The Bengals released Rypien last week after acquiring Joe Flacco in a trade with the Cleveland Browns.

Cincinnati Reds first baseman Spencer Steer and third baseman Ke’Bryan Hayes are finalists for Gold Glove Awards. The winners will be announced on November 2.
