Robert C. Porter, 82

Robert C. Porter, 82, of Greensburg passed away on February 27, 2023. He was born on November 19, 1940 in Westport, Indiana the son of Jonathan and Cora Tucker Porter. Rob was a 1958 graduate of Sand Creek Township High School. He was a United States Army Veteran. On February 20, 1966 he married Lois Van Osdol and together they had two sons, Jonathan and Jeffrey. He was retired from Cummins. He worked for several years as a security guard at Honda and a greeter at Gilliland-Howe Funeral Home. Rob was a member of the Masonic Lodge #36 (Past Master), Eastern Star (Past Worthy Matron) Lodge #147, Scottish Rite, and The Story Church.
Known and loved throughout the community, Rob was always ready with a Tootsie Roll Pop or Blow Pop to encourage student-athletes participating in basketball, volleyball, and softball. Rob was also instrumental in serving the community through his work with Decatur County Men’s Softball, Greensburg High School Music Boosters, and Bread of Life. Rob was also instrumental in the leadership and growth of the First Christian Church, Community Church of Greensburg and Batesville, and, most recently, The Story Church of Greensburg. Rob was the definition of a servant leader, always wanting to lift up others and see them reach their fullest potential. Even in his last days, Rob gave encouragement and love to others. A staff member of Aspen Place described Rob as having a “heart of gold but was tough as nails.”
But for all things and people he loved, his heart belonged to his family. Rob, a proud and supportive son, brother, and uncle, lived for his family. The first to arrive at a grandchild’s event and the last to leave, the greatest joy of Rob’s life was being a grandpa, dad, and husband. If you didn’t know about his kids or their kids, he would be more than happy to tell you about them. But the one who stole his heart was his wife, Lois. On February 20, Rob and Lois Porter celebrated their 57th wedding anniversary.
Survivors include: Wife, Lois Porter; Sons, Jonathan (Kimberly) Porter and Jeffrey (Janet) Porter; Grandchildren, Mary Kate Porter, Emma Marie Porter, Rebekah Michelle Porter, Elizabeth Ann Porter and Zachary Neal Porter; Sisters, Sue (Dale) Blauvelt and Sara (Ed) Shuter; Brother, Edward (Brenda) Dwenger and Sister in Law, Rosalyn (Ed) Doyle.
