(Greensburg, IN) – With a winter storm expected to impact southeastern Indiana, Decatur County REMC is urging members to prepare for possible power outages and to take safety precautions as snow and hazardous conditions move into the area.
The National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Warning for parts of southeastern Indiana, with forecasts calling for heavy snowfall and difficult travel conditions. Decatur County REMC said it is monitoring the weather closely and has crews ready to respond if outages occur.
The cooperative reminded members that the fastest way to report a power outage is by phone, using its 24-hour outage line at 800-844-7362. REMC officials emphasized that outage reports should not be made through social media or email.
Decatur County REMC also warned residents to stay clear of downed power lines.
“Any downed power line should be treated as energized,” the cooperative said. “Do not approach, touch, or attempt to move it. Call 911 or report it immediately.”
As part of storm preparation, REMC encouraged members to charge phones and medical devices ahead of time, keep flashlights and fresh batteries available, and prepare for the possibility of extended outages. Safety officials also routinely caution that generators should never be operated inside homes, garages, or enclosed spaces because of the risk of carbon monoxide poisoning.
Decatur County REMC serves thousands of members across Decatur County and surrounding areas and said restoration efforts will focus first on critical infrastructure before individual service lines, if outages occur.
Updates on outages and restoration progress will be shared through REMC’s official channels as conditions warrant.
