More than 171-K turkeys destroyed in Southern Indiana because of bird flu

SOUTHWESTERN IN — The State Board of Animal Health said Wednesday that more than 171,000 turkeys at six Southern Indiana farms have been destroyed so far in an effort to contain an outbreak of avian influenza, also known as bird flu.

The first farms to report cases were in Dubois and Greene counties, and the state isn’t saying if the bird flu has been found outside of those areas.

Investigators think a combination of wild birds and flooded fields helped spread the disease.
