Michael Wayne Johnson, age 69, of Laurel, Indiana died Monday morning, October 13, 2025 at Margaret Mary Health in Batesville following a lengthy illness.
Born May 2, 1956, in Connersville, Indiana he was the son of Jack & Norita (McFarland) Johnson.
He and the former Melody Knight Nobbe were united in marriage on July 22, 1994, and she survives.
He spent 41 years with the Franklin County Sheriff’s Department, starting as a jailer, then becoming a deputy, and culminating his career as Captain and Jail Commander. He spent his free time tinkering and fixing things and enjoyed model trains as well as caring for his lawn.
Besides Melody, his loving wife of over 31 years, survivors include four children, Matthew Johnson of Rushville, Indiana, Shawna Faye Maupin of Bargersville, Indiana; Christy Cunningham of Batesville, Indiana and Jason Nobbe of Brookville, Indiana; a sister, Teresa Ford of Laurel, Indiana, three brothers, Curtis Johnson, Eric Johnson and Jeff Johnson all of Shelbyville, Indiana, as well as two grandchildren, Mason Cunningham and Kolton Johnson.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by a sister, Debbie Johnson.
Family & friends may visit from 4 until 7:00 P.M. on Thursday, October 16, 2025 at Phillips & Meyers Funeral Home, 1025 Franklin Avenue, Brookville, Indiana.
Preacher John Meyer will officiate the Funeral Service at 11:00 A.M. on Friday, October 17, 2025 at Phillips & Meyers Funeral Home. Burial will then follow in Maple Grove Cemetery in Brookville, where Matt Johnson, Kolton Johnson, Mason Cunningham, Graham Hodges, Tim Maupin and Garrett Knight will serve as pallbearers.
