Melvin Meyer

Melvin E. Meyer, 89 years old of New Alsace, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 25, 2023. He was a simple man that loved good food, good drink, and good company. His favorite past time was sitting on his front porch sipping a Pepsi and waving at everyone that passed by. Melvin and his wife, Millie, rarely travelled, instead they invested their time and treasure on their children and extended family. Their house was always full of their children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. Melvin found great joy and pride in having such a close relationship with all of them. He loved attending their sporting events and weddings; especially dancing with his granddaughters. While raising their kids, life was very simple for Melvin and Millie … on Sundays their extended families always came over; kids would be playing in the yard and the men would enjoy their Hudy Delight while watching them. When his boys were young, Melvin helped coach their Pee Wee and Little League baseball teams. Later he attended all his girls’ softball games and enjoyed cheering them on.

As a sports fan, for more than 25 years Melvin raced up to Indianapolis with his cooler each Memorial Day weekend to spend the holiday with his sons and friends attending the Indianapolis 500. He was also a big Cincinnati Reds fan. After retirement he got Mille to become an avid Red’s fan too. He was a smart, kind, generous man, while also being one of the orneriest. His family will forever miss his jokes, stories and one-liners.

When Melvin got sick with pancreatitis, Millie stood by his side and nursed him back to health. He was beyond grateful for the love and support that she and her children showed him. When he retired from Procter and Gamble, Melvin helped Millie till the vegetable garden, drove her to Kroger, and obliged in any task she would give him. In his later years, due to the diagnosis of dementia, his wife and children helped maintain his ability to remain at home. During his final six months, with a steady decline in health, additional help was needed to fulfil his request to remain at home. The family enlisted the aid of six overnight caretakers (Sherry, Annie, Bev, Karen, Nikki, Monica). Melvin was honored and grateful to have these wonderful women in his life and he created a special bond with each of them.

Melvin will be deeply missed by Millie, his wife of 68 years; children Kenneth Meyer of Pittsboro, IN, James (Rinda) Meyer of Oakland, IL, Ronald (Carmen) Meyer of Pittsboro, IN, Robert Meyer of Batesville, IN, Mary (Patrick) Back of Batesville, IN  Margie (Frank) Eckstein of St. Nicholas, IN, Russ Meyer of  Batesville, IN, Linda Williamson of Batesville, IN, Kathy (Jerry) Zins of Batesville, IN, Anita (Darren) Gunter of Batesville, IN, and Janet (Jerry) Meyer of Sunman, IN; siblings Norman (Henrietta) Meyer Greendale, IN, 46 grandchildren and 51 great grandchildren and growing.
