The Boston Red Sox blanked the Reds 3-0 on Opening Day in Cincinnati as heard yesterday on WRBI. Andrew Abbott tossed six shutout innings with four strike outs. Rookie first baseman Sal Stewart had three of the Reds of four hits, including two doubles. Red Sox starter Garrett Crochet got the win; reliever Pierce Johnson took the loss for Cincinnati; and former Reds closer Aroldis Chapman notched the save. The two teams have the day off before the series resumes tomorrow afternoon. Airtime is 3:40 tomorrow on 103.9 FM.

Purdue advanced to the NCAA Tournament Elite Eight with a 79-77 win over 11th seed Texas in the West Region semifinal in San Jose, California last night. Trey Kaufman-Renn’s tip-in of a Braden Smith miss with .07 seconds remaining lifted the 2nd-seeded Boilermakers to the win. The game featured 10 ties and 16 lead changes. The Longhorns biggest lead was four points; the Boilermakers led by as many as seven. Texas outshot Purdue from the field 52% to 48%. But the Longhorns missed seven free throws (8 of 15). Purdue outscored Texas in the paint 38-30. The Boilermakers were led in scoring by Kaufman-Renn’s 20 points followed by Fletcher Loyer’s 18. Smith had 16 points; Oscar Cluff finished with 11, and CJ Cox scored 10. Purdue is now 30-8 on the year and has a date with #1 seed Arizona in tomorrow night’s West Region final. With a win, the Boilermakers move on to the Final Four in Indianapolis next weekend.
