Lyda “Irene” Walterman, 81, Greensburg

Lyda “Irene” Walterman, 81, of Greensburg, Indiana, passed away surrounded by her family at Franciscan Health Indianapolis on February 18, 2026. She was born June 29, 1944, in Bristol, TN to Fred and Lyda (Callahan) Cross.

Irene graduated from Marian College with her Nursing Degree and held her title as Registered Nurse with extreme dignity. She was a caretaker for all and took great pride in doing so. Irene was known as “Aunt Rene” or “Grandma Rene” to many friends and family. She loved traveling, going on cruises, spending time at the casino, crocheting, baking, and watching the Hallmark Channel. She shared many memories of dances at the Moose Lodge in Greensburg with friends. Irene spent many active years contributing to organizations and causes that were important to her. She helped with the Hot Meals program at St. Mary’s for many years. Irene participated in the Walk to End Alzheimer’s, and Relay for Life over the course of many years as well.

She is survived by four children – Dawn (Andrew) Bates, Tina Walker, Warren (Rose) Bowen, Marilyn Campos; two sisters – Jennie Moore and Judy Zapfe; one brother – Randy (Tobi) Cross; one niece – Lisa (Brandon) Burkhart; 11 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; and 12 great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, Fred and Lyda (Callahan) Cross; 5 brothers -Joe Cross, Blane Cross, Freddie Cross, Scottie Cross and Teddy Cross; and three children -Pamela Faye Walterman, Karen Bowen, and Bobby Bowen.

Friends and family may gather for visitation on Wednesday, February 25, 2026, from 10:00a.m. to 1:00p.m. at Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home in Greensburg, Indiana. A funeral service will follow at 1:00p.m. at Porter-Oliger-Pearson Funeral Home, with graveside services to follow immediately after at St. Mary’s Cemetery in Greensburg, Indiana. Irene will be buried next to her late husband, Max Walterman.
