As heard on WRBI Thursday, South Dearborn Boys Soccer won a 1-nil nailbiter over host Oldenburg.
Our own Terrance Arney who had the call, said both teams looking for a “W” with the Twisters looking to extend a two-game win streak and the Knights hoping to end a three-game skid.
The Twisters were notably amped up for the match as the vast majority of their first half shots went long and over the goal. The Knights had little success navigating through OA’s stingy defense. Things changed, however, midway through the first half.
At the 13:15 minute mark, South Dearborn’s Nakia Scruggs received a cross, lined it up perfectly and delivered a shot to the back of the net. The Knights took a 1-0 lead into the halftime break.
Scruggs goal proved to be enough for the South Dearborn victory as the teams played even in the second half. The Twisters fell to 3-5 on the year while the Knights improved to 6-7.
South Dearborn coach Jon Wismann said the match was rough and SD’s goal by Scruggs was set up by a beautiful hard, low cross across the goal from Dana Lewis.
Coach Wismann praised his defense stating, “Logan Ross, Gage Fenton, Austyn Tibbs, Easton Schumann and Hunter Garland did a fantastic job keeping the Twisters out of scoring positions. The culmination was a joint effort save by the entire backline off a Twister drive which was finally saved by a clearing on the goal line from Garland. Keeper Logan Heeke tallied only four saves, a testament to the great defensive work by the midfield and backline.”
Coach Kenny Getz was on the short side of the scoreboard but said the low scoring match was a fun one to watch.
“If you weren’t there, you missed one wail of a game,” Getz stated. “People who say 1-0 soccer games are boring and don’t have any action should have been there. There was more going on than you could keep up with. It was a very entertaining game. The only bad part of the game was we couldn’t get one in the back of the net. We hit the posts and crossbars butnothing across that white line. This was one of those games, when you watched it and didn’t know the score, you would of thought OA had won the game. We had our chances.”
Getz mentioned soccer often comes down to one or two plays, and SD got the play it needed on a nice cross in the box that OA lost its mark on.
“I want to give a shout out to a couple boys in particular,” said the OA coach. “Jake Negovetich had inspired play. He came out and got the team fired up. Keeper Isaiah Waggoner had his coming out party in goal. This is the type of play we need from him being vocal and aggressive, taking charge of his area and directing the defense.”
Scoring and stats from Oldenburg assistant coach Mike Wilhelm: The Twisters had 29 shots with six on goal, 1 offsides, five fouls, six corners and Isaiah Waggoner had five saves. This was the best game I’ve seen the varsity play this year. The energy was at a high level and they attacked the ball the entire game.
South Dearborn scored in period one at 13:51 on a very long cross into the six with a one touch shot. The Knights had 11 shots with six on goal, four fouls and their keeper had six saves.

Oldenburg won the JV match (one half), 1-0. Both teams played only with 10 due to low numbers.
“Angus Lonergan got his first shot between the pipes and recorded a shutout,” said Getz. “It was a well played game by both teams.”
JV scoring and stats from OA asst. coach Wilhelm: Oldenburg’s Jacob Hilbert scored in the single 30 minute period at 7:48. He was assisted by Hayden Blair’s through ball for a one-touch shot. The JV Twisters had seven shots with four on goal, one offsides, one foul and Angus Lonergan had one save.
The JV Knights had seven shots with three on goal, one offsides, one foul, six corners and their keeper had three saves.
