Greensburg’s pair of 13-0 runs spells win against South Ripley

Saturday, GCHS celebrated the late Phil Snodgress, former teacher and head boys basketball coach for 21 seasons (1976-97). Coach Snodgress had 276 wins, 10 sectional titles and one regional championship with the Pirates. Counting his time at Union County (1969-74), he tallied 350 wins. He was IBCA Coach of the Year in 1974, President of the IBCA in 1985 and inducted into the Union County Athletic Hall of Fame in 2008, The family of coach Snodgress is shown at center court. Saturday night in boys varsity basketball on WRBI, host Greensburg led from tip to final buzzer in a 61-41 victory over South Ripley.

Up 10-9 late in the first quarter, the Pirates took a 13-9 lead at the stop and extended their run into the second with 13 unanswered points.  By halftime, Greensburg held a comfortable 32-15 advantage.

At intermission, the Bucs Colin Comer had 10 points, Brenden Stanley scored seven and Ki Dyer had six.  For Ripley, Blaine Ward led with five, Nick Schwarte and Zach Gentile both put in four.

Greensburg’s final four points of the first half were part of a second, 13-nothing run which put the game away as the spread jumped to 24 points.

South Ripley’s best stretch came late in the latter half of the third period when the Raiders got within 16, but that was as close as it got.  It was 47-29 after three and 61-41 at the closing horn.

Comer ended with 22 points.  Pirate teammates Dakota Walters tallied 13, Stanley finished with 10 and Dyer closed with nine.  On the Raider side, Gentile and Blake Volz both booked a dozen.  All 12 points for Volz came in the second half.  Ward was next in scoring with seven.

Greensburg also won the JV game 50-32. The Pirate reserves got 13 points from Jack McKinsey, 11 via Grainger Maxwell and 10 from Bradley Lutz.  The Raider JV saw Chancie Volz score 11.
