Greensburg, IN — Greensburg City Council this week took the final step toward setting the fire station/street department campus project in motion.

After the final in a series of public hearings on the matter, Council voted 5-0 to move the estimated $20 million construction project forward.

The city will now go through the bond closing process before the end of the year.

If all goes well with financing in the next few weeks, the city will have the green light to proceed on the nearly $20-million, tax-neutral construction project.

“It really is a generational project. It’s one of those things we build every 50 years so we want to make sure we get it right,” said Mayor Joshua Marsh.

The first spades of dirt are expected to be turned on the site at Broadway and Barachel in the spring.

Plans call for the street department to take occupancy of its building in either October or November 2023 while the fire station would go online in March 2024.

The new fire station would replace Fire Station One on Ireland Street, which was been in service since 1975 and is considered obsolete.

The street department is looking to move out of its current building on Monfort Street, which is also considered obsolete and cramped.
