Greensburg city leaders give vote of confidence to new fire station

A mock-up of a new Fire Station One from RQAW Consulting Engineers was shown to both Greensburg City Council and the Board of Works in November 2021. Proposed designs have not been drawn but both bodies gave a vote of confidence Tuesday night to proceed with designs and land acquisition.

GREENSBURG, IN — Greensburg City Council and the Board of Works on Tuesday night both gave a vote of confidence to move ahead with the construction of a new fire station.

Fire Chief Nathan Stoermer said this comes after the Fire Station Task Force met twice in the past month and recommended to both council and the board of works that the department move from the current Ireland Street location and acquire land on another site.

“We can begin looking at initial concepts and drawings for the fire station as we work through land acquisition as well as exploring where are our best options as far as location,” Stoermer said.

Stoermer added the new fire station would likely be designed on a 2- to 3-acre parcel.

“Once we have land acquisition and are able to dial that in to meet that, but since we don’t have that yet, we don’t want to slow down the process but yet want to respect the process and make sure that those decisions are made correctly,” he said.

The Fire Station Task Force consists of one City Council member, one Board of Works member, Mayor Joshua Marsh, a firefighter, and Chief Stoermer.

The fire department has been headquartered on Ireland Street since 1975 and has outgrown the facility.

Once everything is in place, construction of the new fire station could take 14 to 18 months to complete.
