VERSAILLES, Ind. – An event this week is open to Ripley County residents looking to learn more information on smoking cessation programs.
The Great American Smoke-Out will be held at the Ripley County Courthouse Annex from 11-1 p.m. Thursday.
“November is also Diabetes Awareness month and Lung Cancer Awareness month,” said Vicky Powell, Ripley County Public Health Nurse for the Ripley County Health Department. “The Ripley County Health Department would like to highlight these as well as other health-related topics of interest to members of our community.”
It’s open to anyone wishing to learn more information: Whether you’re trying to kick the habit or looking to help someone else stop smoking.
Ripley County Health Department Staff along with Medical Reserve Corps Volunteers will be in the main lobby of the new Courthouse Annex from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with information on smoking cessation programs.
Visitors also will have an opportunity to obtain information from the many other vendors who will also have booths set up during the event.
Free Cold Turkey Sandwiches will be served to highlight the Theme of “Quitting Cold Turkey!” Free blood pressure checks and free hand massages will be offered by Southeastern Career Center Health Careers and Cosmetology students.
The American Cancer Society marks the Great American Smoke-Out on the third Thursday of November each year by encouraging smokers to use the date to make a plan to quit, or to plan in advance and quit smoking that day.
Tobacco use remains the single largest preventable cause of disease and premature death in the U.S., according to an American Cancer Society report.
