Edwin V. (Pork) Kirschner, age 78 of Oldenburg, died Friday, September 15, 2017 at Margaret Mary Health. Born July 14, 1939 in Oldenburg, he is the son of Eulalia (Nee: Ferkinhoff) and Ivoe Kirschner. He married Joyce Fasbinder May 21, 1960 at Holy Family Church in Oldenburg. He served in the army and after the service went to work at McAlpin’s in Cincinnati as a purchasing agent, retiring after 35 years. He was a member of Holy Family Church, the Knights of St. John Commandry #243 and the Knights of Columbus Council #1461 in Batesville as well as a former member of the Batesville Life Squad and Batesville Kiwanis.
Pork loved the Christmas season and everything about Christmas, from the spiritual aspect, to being with family, to the music, to the food. It was somewhere in this that a decade’s long hobby of making nativity scenes or crèches was born. About ten years ago he turned his hobby into a business, opening the Creche Shop in Oldenburg. The register book at the shop tells of the people from all over the world who have visited him and become owners of his handmade, heirloom quality creations. For several years he has been a member of Oldenburg’s “Christmas Under the Spires” committee to help with the annual event.
For Pork, family and faith were most important to him along with his pride for his hometown of Oldenburg. He loved nothing better than having his family together. Whether it was a game of Scrabble with some of the kids or the kids getting Pork to explore his inner thrill seeker and urging him by try rafting or sky diving, he was game. In recent years, he also enjoyed stopping by the Knight’s Hall for an afternoon game of Euchre or 7-up.
He is survived by his wife Joyce; daughters and son-in-laws Jennifer and Joe Ruwe, Karen and Scott Glum, all of Cincinnati; sons and daughter-in-laws Jeff and Kathy Kirschner of Cincinnati, Kurt and Sherri Kirschner of Batesville; sister Martha Fie of Cincinnati; brother Tom Kirschner of Indianapolis and grandchildren Sam Kirschner of Cincinnati, Will Kirschner of Bloomington, Indiana, Nick Kirschner of Indianapolis, Alex and Max Kirschner of Batesville, Elizabeth and Katherine Ruwe and Elliot and Michael Glum, all of Cincinnati. In addition to his parents, he is also preceded in death by his brother Allan Kirschner.
Visitation is Tuesday, September 19th, from 4 – 7 p.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home with a rosary at 3:45 p.m. Funeral services are 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 20th, at Holy Family Church. Due to allergies, the family requests no flowers. Memorials may be made to the Holy Family Church Capital Improvement Fund or Oldenburg Academy.
