Batesville girls golf defeated Columbus North 175-234 at Harrison Lake Country Club. Bulldog sophomore Stella Maple took medalist honors with a 2-over par-37.

Batesville boys tennis opened the season with a 5-0 varsity win over visiting Milan. The Bulldogs take a 1-0 record to Connersville tomorrow night to open EIAC play. BHS also claimed the JV match 4-0.

Greensburg and Batesville split in middle school volleyball. It was the Pirates over Bulldogs in two sets in the 7th grade match. Batesville took the 8th match in two sets (25-14, 25-10).

The St. Louis Cardinals blanked the Reds 3-0 in the middle game of their series in downtown Cincinnati heard last night on WRBI.  The Reds were limited to three hits on the night. Andrew Abbott went 6 1/3 innings and allowed two earned runs on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts. Despite an excellent effort, Abbott was tagged with the loss and is now 6-8. The five-game series continues tonight. Chase Burns (14-2, 2,47 ERA) looks for his 15th win. He’ll be opposed by lefthander Matthew Liberatore (5-10, 5.07 ERA). Coverage begins at 6:10 on 103.9 FM.

Before last night’s game, outfielder Noelvi Marte was optioned to Triple-A Louisville and catcher Will Banfield was called up. It’s the second time this year that the struggling Marte was sent down. He was hitting .189 with six home runs in 63 overall games this year, but this month, his numbers slipped to .133 with no homers. Marte has also struggled defensively. He was sent down to Louisville in April before being recalled in June. Banfield hit .262 with 11 home runs in 79 games this season for the Bats. He’ll be the third catcher on the Reds roster behind Tyler Stephenson and Jose Trevino.

The Indiana Fever knocked off the Toronto Tempo 101-95 in WNBA action north of the border last night. Kelsey Mitchell led all scorers with 29 points. It’s the Fever’s fifth straight win. The road trip continues tomorrow night in Dallas against the Wings.

Fever guard Caitlin Clark is the WNBA Eastern Conference Player of the Week. Clark averaged 25.7 points per game and 9.7 assists per contest. It’s the fourth time this year that Clark has been named Player of the Week and the seventh time in her career.

ESPN is reporting that the Indianapolis Colts have signed veteran wide receiver Keenan Allen to one-year, $8-million contract. The 34-year-old Allen had 81 catches last season with the Los Angeles Chargers.

Notre Dame is ranked fourth and defending national champion Indiana holds down the sixth spot in the AP Top 25 college football preseason poll. Ohio State is ranked #1, followed by Big 10 rival Oregon in the 2nd spot, then Georgia, the Fighting Irish and Texas to round out the top five. Behind the Hoosiers at #7 is Miami of Florida – the team IU beat in last January’s national championship game. SEC teams Texas A & M, Ole Miss, and Oklahoma are 8, 9 and 10, respectively.
