(Statehouse) – Two bills sponsored by State Sen. Jean Leising (R-Oldenburg) passed the Senate and will now return to the House of Representatives for further consideration.
House Bill 1490 would allow the Indiana Horse Racing Commission to issue a license for certain individuals to provide teeth floating on a licensed horse race track in Indiana.
“Racing tracks in Indiana have had an extremely difficult time ensuring their horses receive proper dental care, sometimes needing to travel out-of-state to do so,” said Leising. “This bill would address the shortage of in-state care providers while maintaining adequate standards of care.”
House Bill 1425 would require the Indiana Department of Agriculture, State Board of Animal Health and the Indiana Department of Health to conduct a study to determine the safety of cultivated meat products for human consumption and establish a one-year moratorium on the sale of cultivated meat products in Indiana.
“There is not enough research into lab-grown meat products and their safety for consumers,” said Leising. “This bill would ensure our state takes basic steps to guarantee this product is safe before allowing it on the market.”
The bills were both amended while in the Senate, and upon approval of the same language by both the Senate and the House, will move to the governor’s desk for final approval.
