Edith M. “Eydie” Lamping

Edith M. Lamping, age 82 of Hamburg, Indiana, passed away on Saturday, October 26, 2024. Born November 8, 1941, in Morris, Indiana, she is the daughter of Herman and Irene (Nee: Bedel) Merkel. She married Joseph Lamping on July 6, 1960, at St. Anne’s Catholic Church in Hamburg, and he preceded her in death on January 25, 2003.

Edith (Eydie) first worked for Hillenbrand Industries before becoming a homemaker to raise her family while also babysitting for many kids in Hamburg.  She later enjoyed working at several retail stores in Batesville and then returning to Hillenbrand for a few years before retiring. She was a member of St. Anne’s Catholic Church, its choir and its Ladies Society while also serving as an officer on the church’s building committee.

At age seven, Eydie moved from Morris to Hamburg, the town she called home for seventy –five years. In her early adult years Eydie liked attending dances with Joe and being actively involved in her church and community. She enjoyed gardening as she was often seen with her family in their big vegetable garden. She also loved tending to her flowers, and she could always find a new spot to plant a few more. In addition, Eydie loved to cook and bake. She assumed everyone was hungry when they visited and was determined to send them away full. She was best known for her delicious chocolate chip cookies, which she took immense pleasure in sharing with others. Family gatherings were filled with love, home-cooked meals, and spirited card games.

Eydie was hardworking and kind-hearted with a wonderful smile. She was devout in her Catholic faith which provided her strength through life’s challenges. Above all, her family was most important, and her grandchildren and great-grandchildren were the light of her life.

She is survived by her daughters Diane (Steve) Fullenkamp and Donna Hoeing both of Batesville; Cindy Lamping of Chicago; son Mike Lamping of Hamburg; grandchildren Angela (Sam) Bailie and Ann Carriger both of Batesville; Mike Hoeing of Chicago; Bryan Hoeing of Indianapolis; great-granddaughters Lucy, Mia and Sophie Bailie and great-grandsons John and Drew Carriger; brothers Jerry (Shirley) Merkel of Batesville, Ken (Missy) Merkel of Metamora; sister Theresa (Lawrence) Bedel of Oldenburg as well as numerous nieces and nephews.

In addition to her parents and husband Joe, she was preceded in death by her sons Dan and Greg, son-in-law John “Buck” Hoeing, and brother Bob Merkel.

Visitation is Sunday, November 3 from 1:00 – 3:00 pm. Friends and family are welcome to join in a rosary at 12:30 pm at Weigel Funeral Home. A Mass of Christian Burial will take place at 10:00 am on Monday at Holy Family Catholic Church in Oldenburg, with Fr. John Barker OFM officiating. The burial will follow at St. Anne’s Cemetery.
