Local Communities Can Apply For Transportation Funding

INDOT will accept applications from cities, towns and counties for an estimated $86 million in federal transportation funding, beginning April 14.

In early February, INDOT awarded $86 million in federal transportation funding for local projects that would be bid beginning July 2016. The latest round of funding is for projects that would be designed, developed and have purchased land according to federal standards prior to bid during the state fiscal year beginning July 2017.

Rural communities may submit any local project eligible for $73 million in federal highway funds, including bridge, road and safety projects. In addition, all communities may seek $13 million in Transportation Alternatives funding for non-motorized projects such as trails and Safe Routes to School projects.

INDOT sets aside 25 percent of the federal highway funds appropriated by Congress each year to fund larger local transportation projects. Metropolitan Planning Organizations distribute federal highway funds to local communities within the state’s larger urbanized areas while INDOT distributes funds outside MPO areas. To receive federal funding, typically communities must pay 20 percent in local matching funds.

Local public agency employees certified as an “Employee in Responsible Charge” must submit applications electronically using INDOT’s website. Applications will be accepted and must be submitted by 5 p.m. on Monday, May 12. Project awards will be announced no later than June 16, 2014.

St. Louis Catholic Church is having their Mock Turtle Soup Sale! Monday, September 15- noon-6:30 p.m. Tuesday, September 16- 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Wednesday, September 17-Friday, September 19- 8 a.m.-6:30 p.m. Sunday, September 21- during the annual St. Louis Church Festival, theMock Turtle Soup will be available for sale until it’s gone. Please enter through the Activity Center doors only! The soup will also be available through the week at Schmidt’s Bakery during their normal business hours. If you have any empty quart, half-gallon, or gallon jars you can spare (or canning lids and/or rings), you can bring them to the SLS Activity Center or Schmidt’s Bakery, as jars and lids are still needed to bottle the soup throughout the week.

Four acts to perform with the headliner being The Promise Hero from Cleveland. If you love a great catchy song that gets stuck in your head this band will be right up your alley. The three other acts are solo singer/songwriters. The first being a senior at Batesville High School, Stanley Fryman. Another act is one of the band members of the Promise Hero that calls himself Mute Boy. The last act will be an acoustic artist out of Shelbyville, Eric Montgomery. All ages welcome! This event is great for the teen audience. No drinking or smoking inside the venue, but there are FREE brownies for all attendees. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. with the concert beginning at 6 p.m. Pre-ordered tickets are $5. Email Anna to get your name on the list! If your name is not on the list the cost is $8 at the door. All proceeds from the event go to the acts and venue to support local music and small bands.
