(Batesville, IN) – At its October Board of Directors meeting, the Southeastern Indiana YMCA celebrated two shining examples of service and positivity—Scott and Tracy Smith—who have been honored with the Y’s prestigious S.O.A.R. Award for their outstanding commitment, enthusiasm, and impact on members both in and out of the water.

This award honors Y employees who consistently go above and beyond, embodying the organization’s core values of caring, honesty, respect, and responsibility, and making a lasting impact on the community they serve.

Every time Scott and Tracy walk through the Y’s doors, they bring an undeniable wave of positivity and enthusiasm. Known for their upbeat energy and warm smiles, they make every class fun, welcoming, and meaningful—both in and out of the water. Their ability to connect with members, encourage others, and spread joy is what truly sets them apart.

This year, the Smiths went above and beyond by stepping into a new role as instructors for the Y’s Safety Around Water program, a vital initiative that teaches children ages 6–9 how to stay safe in and around the water. Though it was their first time teaching the program, they immediately dove in with patience, creativity, and heart.

“They were kind, patient, and engaging—and by the end, Scott had even become the crowd favorite,” said Alyssa Enneking, Southeastern Indiana YMCA Assistant Director of Programs. “They are adventurous, upbeat, and such a joy to work with. No matter what’s going on, they find a way to stay cheerful and make others smile. I am so grateful to have them on our team.”

Southeastern Indiana YMCA CEO Tara Britton, added, “We had nine days of Safety Around Water classes with third graders from Batesville Intermediate School. Scott and Tracy taught almost every day for a week and a half—three hours a day. All we heard was how fun Scott’s station was! That’s what this program is all about—helping kids find joy and confidence in the water while learning to respect it. This was their first year teaching, and now we’re not letting them go!”

Tracy reflected on the experience, saying, “I’m a retired high school teacher from Cincinnati, and these kids were amazing—kind, polite, and respectful. Whoever the forces are that make this program happen, it is phenomenal. We had some kids who were white-knuckling the side of the pool at first, afraid to get in, but by the end, they were jumping in with life jackets and smiles. It was such a rewarding experience.”

“Scott and Tracy truly exemplify the heart of the Y,” said Britton. “Their positivity, compassion, and willingness to serve make our community stronger. We are so proud to have them as part of our Y family.”

The Southeastern Indiana YMCA is honored to recognize the extraordinary dedication of its staff, whose daily efforts ensure the Y remains a safe, welcoming, and uplifting place where everyone can learn, grow, and thrive.
