Work begins this week to expand Intelligent Transportation Systems along I-74

Southeastern, IN — Indiana Department of Transportation contractor Midwestern Electric plans to begin work this week to expand INDOT’s Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) on I-74 between U.S. 421 and U.S. 52.

The majority of work will be completed under daytime shoulder closures in various locations. Overnight lane closures are possible later in the spring. The nearly-$1 million contract was awarded last year and is expected to be complete this summer.

Indiana’s ITS includes traffic cameras, in-pavement sensors, dynamic message boards and other interactive signage. The systems communicate weather conditions, traffic speeds, and other roadway data to INDOT’s Traffic Management Center, which provides information to road users directly and on TrafficWise.

Motorists should slow down, use extra caution, and drive distraction-free in and near work zones. All work is weather dependent and schedules are subject to change.
