William H. Erne, age 84 of Batesville, died Wednesday, January 1, 2020 at St. Andrew’s Health Campus. Born July 14, 1935 in Batesville, he is the son of Bertha (Nee: Boehmer) and Herman Erne. He worked at Batesville Casket Company dispatching and scheduling for 32 years before retiring in 1992.
Bill was an avid sports fan. A mainstay at Batesville High School sporting events, he was a student manager while in high school and in 1965 he became the official statistician for the Batesville football and basketball teams for the next 21 years. He coached youth basketball and little league baseball for over 20 years. After he was no longer coaching baseball, he began umpiring for little league. Bill was also a diehard Reds and Bengals fan and truly loved to fish. He taught his nephews to fish and enjoyed taking them with him.
He is survived by his brothers Bob Erne of Batesville, Joe Erne of Indianapolis; niece Kim Erne of Denver, Colorado; nephews Ted Erne of Louisville, Kentucky, Matt and Rob Erne of Batesville, Jay Erne of Jacksonville, Florida as well as numerous great nieces and nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents.
Visitation is Monday, January 6th, from 9 – 10:30 a.m. at the Weigel Funeral Home. Funeral services follow at 11 a.m. at St. Louis Church with Rev. Santhosh Yohannan officiating, with burial in the church cemetery. The family requests memorials to the Batesville Athletics Booster Club.
