West Nile Virus Turns Up in Ripley County

(Ripley County, IN) – Ongoing surveillance has determined that a mosquito in Ripley County has tested positive for the West Nile Virus.

The Ripley County Health Department, along with the Indiana Department of Health (IDOH), set mosquito traps this time of year and test the bugs for various things, including West Nile.

Health Officer Dr. David Welsh says there are no confirmed human cases of West Nile Virus in Ripley County.

He adds there are steps you take to cut down on mosquitos and the risk of contracting West Nile.

These include get rid of breeding grounds by eliminating standing water; using bug repellant spray when outside and using wearing long sleeve shirts, particularly in the woods.

“The other thing is, if you get mosquito bites and your body does not respond you’d normally expect, you need to get it checked out,” Dr. Welsh said.
