Wanda R. Wernke

Wanda R. Wernke, age 94 of Batesville, died Sunday, June 14, 2020 at Majestic Care in North Vernon. Born January 12, 1926 in Batesville, she is the daughter of Alma (Nee: Mozer) and Edwin Wernke.

Wanda began her working career in the kitchen at Margaret Mary Hospital, but eventually would stop working to take care of her parents as health issues necessitated. She spent the majority of her life serving as the caregiver to her parents. Aside from those caregiver responsibilities, Wanda was also a part-time housekeeper for her neighbors. She loved flowers and found great pleasure watering and caring for her wide variety of flowers. Wanda also enjoyed watching sports and was an avid fan of the Cincinnati Reds and Indiana University basketball. For her, bike riding was a fun activity and she would often ride to town or nearby Liberty Park to watch baseball games. Later in life she would go back to work in the housekeeping department for Hillenbrand Industries.

Wanda is survived by her sister-in-law Kate Wernke of North Vernon, as well as several nieces and nephews. In addition to her parents, she is also preceded in death by her brothers Edward “Jake” and Paul “Ham” Wernke. Funeral services will be held 11 a.m. Thursday at St. Louis Church with Rev.
