Vote for your favorite donut shops, lakes, and unique sleeps in the state

Statewide — Voting is open for Visit Indiana’s 2020 Best of Indiana people’s choice campaign, which this year will coincide with The 20 IN 20. Voters can select their favorite Lakes, Donut Shops, and Unique Sleeps around the state. There are 20 places to choose from in each category, announced today in the latest The 20 IN 20 lists.

Southeastern Indiana has made the list in all three categories.

Donuts:

Schmidt Bakery, Batesville
Schmidt Bakery opened in 1963, initially selling both pizza and donuts. Now a full line bakery that no longer offers pizza, its donuts still steal the show. During select happy hour days, its delicious donuts are only 50 cents! Schmidt Bakery also whips up Cherry Thing-a-Lings once a year in February as a treat to its guests.

Lakes:

Brookville Lake, Brookville
Brookville Lake is home to both Mounds SRA and Quakertown SRA and sits next to Whitewater Memorial State Park. Beyond its great boating opportunities and nationally known recreational and sport fishing, two great beaches make Brookville Lake an ideal family vacation spot. Check out Thistlethwaite Falls 20 miles to the north for some fossil hunting.

Unique Sleeps:

The Sherman, Batesville
One of the oldest buildings in Indiana, The Sherman (formerly the Sherman House) has been a unique dining and lodging destination since 1852. The recent renovations strengthened the historic charm of this German Tudor-style building. Updates also brought the additions of the Black Forest Bar and Sherman Biergarten, both eclectic in style.

Schenck Mansion Bed & Breakfast, Vevay
In the beautiful old river town of Vevay, there’s a haunted mansion with a lot of history. In fact, you can actually spend a night in this spooky (and awesome) Bed & Breakfast! Built in 1874, Schenck Mansion Bed & Breakfast rises gloriously over the city with its Italianate and Second Empire architectural styles. It sat empty in the early decades of the 20th century but opened to the public in 2000. Schenck Mansion has five romantic guest rooms, including a 3-room suite, that are each furnished with antique and reproduction furniture.

Story Inn, Nashville
Have you heard about the tiny town in Brown County? That would be Story! The community dates back to 1851 as a lumber town founded by George Story with a church, grain mill, blacksmith shop, two general stores, a post office, butcher shop, and some homes. The entire town was purchased by Rick Hofstetter in 1999. Today, the centerpiece of Story is certainly the beautiful Story Inn. There are now 18 original rooms or cottages that were once homes or working facilities for Story’s original residents. Each is decorated with Victorian-era furniture, photos, and other antiques.
