(Ripley County, IN) – The Ripley County Community Foundation has established the Larry Sutherlin Memorial Scholarship.

The Sutherlin family established this scholarship in memory of Larry, who passed away in June 2023 at the age of 80 and dedicated his life to education.

Mr. Sutherlin was a longtime educator whose teaching career began at Moores Hill School and continued for 33 years in the South Ripley School Corporation.

During his time at South Ripley, Mr. Sutherlin taught juniors and seniors, served as prom director, student council sponsor, class sponsor, in addition to coaching baseball and freshman basketball.

Mr. Sutherlin was a member of the Ripley County Retired Teachers Association, and was bestowed the Sagamore of the Wabash by Indiana Governor Frank O’Bannon.

The Larry Sutherlin Memorial Scholarship will support a graduating senior from South Ripley High School who demonstrates financial need in the pursuit of a post-secondary degree.

“Larry possessed a great love for children and his life’s blessing was in teaching. He was a role model for hundreds of students and found joy in guiding students to achieve their full potential. Through this scholarship fund, we hope to support tomorrow’s teachers and find happiness in the fact that Larry’s legacy will continue to impact the lives of local students for generations,” said Larry’s widow, Sue Sutherlin.
