Storms Leave Behind Damage, Downed Trees, Power Lines

(Southeastern IN) – Severe weather rumbled through the area Sunday night, with multiple tornado and severe thunderstorm warnings issued.

Ripley County Communications received unconfirmed reports of a tornado on the ground near 800 North and Michigan Road around 8 p.m.

Additional reports of damage and a funnel cloud traveling east-to-northeast were also received.

No injuries have been reported. However, power outages, damaged homes and roads blocked by debris were reported all over Ripley County, most of which is along State Road 48 from Napoleon to Sunman.

Nearly every fire department in the county, the Ripley County Sheriff’s Office, and Sunman Police Department were out Sunday night assessing damage and clearing the roadways.

Duke Energy and Southeastern Indiana REMC worked into early Monday to restore power to those whose service was interrupted.

INDOT and Ripley County Highway Department crews were are also called out to remove debris from the roads.

Decatur County Emergency Management reported numerous trees and power lines were downed throughout the county. About 12-hundred people were without power as of 9:15 last night.

Franklin County Emergency Management is asking residents to post pictures of damage with location on the agency’s social media accounts. Those who don’t want their photos posted publicly can post to the agency’s Facebook page or email ema@franklincounty.in.gov.

At the height of the storms, several thousand people were without power across Southeastern Indiana. Most of those affected had their electric service restored, as of Monday morning.

Teams from the National Weather Service are expected to fan out across the area to survey damage.
