Sister Lynne Matteson, age 81, of the Sisters of St. Francis in Oldenburg, Indiana, died on March 6, 2025, at the Motherhouse in Oldenburg, Indiana. Born on May 29, 1943, in Syracuse, New York, she was the only child of the late John and Elizabeth (nee: Buckingham) Matteson. Her father worked as a salesman and her mother was a receptionist/insurance secretary. They moved about every two years, starting in New York and ending in the Cincinnati, Ohio area.
Sister Lynne attended Walnut Hills High School and Woodward High School and then went on to the University of Cincinnati for her undergrad, earning a bachelor’s degree in education. She followed that with a master’s in education from Indiana University. Sister Lynne was brought up as Presbyterian. She discovered the Catholic Church when she was a teenager and felt at home there.
Sister Lynne spent thirty-seven years in secondary education as a teacher and counselor in Cincinnati and Indianapolis. She served 11 years as a history teacher at Cathedral High School in Indianapolis. As a single adult, she adopted a nine-year old daughter. Sister Lynne was also adopted by her parents. After her daughter married, it was then that she entered the Sisters of St. Francis, Oldenburg. She found religious life exciting, enlivening and life giving.
Sister Lynne returned to the Motherhouse upon retirement from teaching but was far from retired. She assisted in the Communications Office and then helped in the sewing room. As her health declined, she decided it was time to retire to prayer and presence.
