The East Central girls cross country team placed 6th out of 16 teams in the Franklin Community Invitational over the weekend. The Trojans’ Callie Bentley came in 4th individually with a time of 19:06…The EC boys team finished 17th out of 18 teams.
Batesville boys soccer finished 0-2 at the Shelbyville Invitational on Saturday. The Bulldogs fell to Bloomington North 4-nil in the first match, and dropped a hard-fought 2-1 decision to the host Golden Bears in the nightcap.
East Central moves up a notch to #4 in Class 5A in this week’s Indiana Football Coaches Association poll. In 1A, North Decatur is up one spot to #2. Milan falls three spots to #9 after Friday’s loss at Batesville.
Noelvi Marte’s two-run single in the bottom of the 9th inning lifted the Reds to a 5-4 walk off win over the Toronto Blue Jays in the opening game of their series at Great American Ball Park as heard yesterday on WRBI. The Reds held a 2-1 lead going into the 9th before Bo Bichette and Daulton Varsho hit back-to-back home runs to put the Blue Jays on top at 4-2. In the bottom of the frame, TJ Friedl’s ground rule double to right field scored Ke’Bryan Hayes to bring the Reds to within one. The rally was capped off by Marte’s game winning hit. Reds top prospect Sal Stewart made his big league debut and started at first base. Stewart singled in his first Major League at bat and went 1 for 3 at the plate. Yosver Zulueta, who was also called up from Triple-A Louisville along with Stewart, got the win and is 1-0. The middle game of the series is tonight. Lefthander Nick Lodolo gets the ball for Cincinnati. Toronto counters with righthander Jose Berrios. Coverage begins at 6:10 on 103.9 FM.
The Cincinnati Bengals have signed two-time Super Bowl champion and former Kansas City Chiefs defensive tackle Mike Pennel to the practice squad…The team on Monday also named its captains for the 2025 season. They are Joe Burrow, Ja’Marr Chase, Orlando Brown, Jr., Ted Karras, Trey Hendrickson, Logan Wilson and B.J. Hill. Cincinnati opens at Cleveland on Sunday.
The Indianapolis Colts adjusted their practice squad on Monday. The team signed linebacker Anthony Walker Jr. and released defensive tackle Josh Tupou. Indy opens the regular season on Sunday when it hosts the Miami Dolphins. The Colts have not won their regular-season opener since 2014. Head coach Shane Steichen says they want to do everything they can to end that streak.
IU football coach Curt Cignetti says he and his team did not give Hoosier fans much to cheer about in their 27-14 win over Old Dominion. He told the press on Monday that they left a lot of points on the table, but that he is never going to complain about getting a victory. He hopes the Hoosiers can clean some things up against Kennesaw State this coming Saturday.
Notre Dame quarterback CJ Carr is using a quote from his father to keep himself locked in mentally after their loss to Miami on Sunday. He told the press that his father once said, “The best way to get rid of a loss is with a win.” They hope to do just that when Texas A&M comes to Notre Dame Stadium next Saturday night. The Fighting Irish beat the Aggies in College Station last year.
